The space where the headquarters of the Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory of the University of Coimbra (OGAUC) is located has 7 hectares of land. There, you can find office spaces, astronomical domes, a digital planetarium, a small museum, a workshop, and empty land that was covered with trees and vegetation in the past. Over recent years, and mainly due to two major meteorological storms, more than 100 large and mature trees fell, leaving the once pleasant small forest empty, as shown in Figure 1.

Recently, efforts have been made to replan the land, with almost 100 autochthonous trees, bushes, and other small plants being planted. Despite that, a significant portion of the land still needs intervention. This brings a unique opportunity to collaborate between ESWW2024 in partnership with the OGAUC.

We know that the carbon footprint of such events as ESWW can be significant, and it is also our responsibility to help contribute to reducing it when possible.

In partnership with the OGAUC, we plan to plant as many trees and plants as possible on the OGAUC premises. OGAUC has already acquired 40 oak trees that will be planted in the following months. Now, your contribution is crucial. During the conference, we will set up a box where we will collect donations that will then be used to buy new trees and other autochthonous plants.

During the conference, we will also announce the schedule where you can go and visit the observatory and even help plant a tree if you want 🙂
