EDI & Sustainability statement

ESWW 2024 is devoted to universal values of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), as well as sustainability regarding the environmental impact of the conference, and we expect all participants to adhere to the same principles.

The ESWW2024 strives to:

  • bring communities together to encourage cross-disciplinary dialogue in the field of space weather and space climate, and to foster scientific excellence, collaboration, networking and exchange of knowledge;
  • promote the delivering of reliable space weather services and monitoring capabilities;
  • invite participants and speakers from across the broad range of the space weather and space climate disciplines, and of diverse backgrounds (career stage, gender, ethnicity, nationality, citizenship, economic status, or others);
  • foster a culture of inclusion, openness and mutual respect, and to create a safe environment that supports the well-being and success of all participants;
  • commit to the best possible sustainable development practices and to minimise its environmental impact;
  • make the conference accessible to those with specific needs.

As such, we have adopted the following directives:

  • While it is expected that tutors, conveners, invited speakers and speakers in general are selected primarily according to the research relevance criteria, we strongly advise to keep diversity in mind during the selection process;
  • As not all ESWW community members come from equal economic backgrounds, we have implemented a reduced registration fee for sensitive groups, and will allows for further financial support applications (evaluated on a case-by-case basis);
  • We minimise the usage of disposable plastic and encourage the usage of recyclable material during the conference. In addition, we encourage usage of recycling bins throughout the venue;
  • The venue, rooms and bathroom are wheelchair accessible.

Recommendations for conference participants:

We need your help to reduce the environmental impact of the ESWW 2024. The largest contribution to the carbon footprint of a conference stems from personal travel of the attendees, followed by their accommodation and services provided on-site.

We strongly encourage you to take the following points into consideration when planning your trip:

  • Travel to the Conference: We encourage you to choose means of transportation with the smallest emission footprint that is available to you.
  • Limit total number of trips: Consider limiting the number of international conferences that require emission-intensive trips you attend each year. Many such conferences offer virtual participation options, which can significantly reduce your personal carbon footprint.

Here are some recommendations on how you can reduce your environmental impact on site:

  • Digital Materials: We will provide all conference materials in digital format. Please refrain from printing them unless absolutely necessary.
  • Soft mobility and public transportation: All social event locations and a great number of accommodation options are within walking distance from the conference venue. We encourage you to use public transportation, carpooling, or other eco-friendly means of travel for commuting to and from the conference venue whenever walking or non-motorised means of transportation are not a viable option.
  • Reusable Items: Please bring your own reusable water bottle, coffee cup. We will have water refill stations at the venue.
  • Accommodation and food: We encourage you to select eco-friendly accommodation and food options whenever feasible.

By following these recommendations, you will be playing a crucial role in reducing the environmental impact of our conference. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
